This Grade 2 listed terrace of shop-dwellings was constructed in the early 1800’s, but the buildings were derelict by the mid 2010’s. Internal floors were missing in many areas, and the external walls were unstable; some having collapsed.
The decision was taken to accurately record the building features, then dismantle and rebuild the external walls, with new structures to the rear, and an additional storey behind a new mansard roof. The foundations of the new structures had to be piled due to the proximity and depth of the Queensway road tunnel, which had been constructed below Dale Street in the 1920’s and 1930’s.
EBC Ltd designed the piled foundations and superstructures, and carried out a condition survey of the road tunnel prior to the installation of vibration monitoring in the tunnel; all before the piling works commenced.
